About Us

Beck Veterinary Clinic is a small, family-oriented veterinary practice located on the South Side of Edmonton. Dr. Nick Beck is the primary veterinarian, and is a second generation vet. His Mom, Dr. Susan Beck, opened the clinic in 1976.

The Beck Vet clinic has many long-term clients and we are currently welcoming new patients. As a smaller practice, our clients benefit from continuity of care – you won’t be shuffled around between personnel.

We recognize the important decisions you must make regarding your pet and we commit to providing the best care for your family member.

Mission

The goal of the Beck Veterinary Clinic is to provide an environment of progressive, high quality veterinary care in a caring and practical manner to our clients. The essential balance of quality and quantity of life to pets and resulting impact to owners is the cornerstone of this practice. Our role is to support the bond both between people and their pets, as well as between clients and our team. Clients will have trust and confidence in our practice and the care and treatment their pets receive. Our staff will enjoy a positive and healthy work environment which promotes continuing education, camaraderie and work-life balance.

Our Staff

Dr. Beck graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor in Science in 1991. He moved to Saskatchewan and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. He worked in a mixed practice clinic in Camrose before joining Dr. Susan Beck at the clinic she started in 1976. Dr. Nick bought the practice in 1998. The best part of his job is getting to know the clients and their pets over the years. Many of our clients have been coming to the clinic with their pets for over 20 years! Dr. Beck is an avid cyclist who will ride his bike to work as many days of the year as possible.

Dr. Torkelson has come to us via a very interesting journey! He is originally from Regina (and yes, he is a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan), where he completed a degree in Biology with honours in 1994. He went on to complete a Masters of Science in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Alberta in 1997. Not quite done being a student, Joel went to Saskatoon and completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. He initially practiced in Airdrie, Alberta then Martensville, Saskatchewan before returning to Alberta to practice in Sherwood Park and Edmonton. Dr.Torkelson has been with the Beck Veterinary team since 2015.

Justine first came to the Beck Veterinary clinic as a client with her chocolate lab Penny, and loved the team so much that when the opportunity arose she joined us in 2018. Since being a stay at home mum for 14 years she found the transition to working with furry family members a natural fit. When Justine is not at the clinic, she enjoys camping, crafting and enjoying everything that life has to offer! Justine is not only our receptionist, but also the clinic manager. She’s likely the first person you’ll talk to.

Tracy has been with the clinic for over 20 years. She has worked as receptionist, office manager and client services manager. She has met many clients over the years in both clinic locations. In her spare time, she loves lake time, running (aka plodding), organizing events and spending time with family.

Jenna has been a Registered Veterinary Technologist since 2015. She previously worked at an emergency clinic in the city before coming to work at the Beck Veterinary clinic. Since working here, Jenna has loved being able to get to know and care for all of our wonderful patients. She realized early on in life that she wanted to care for animals and always enjoyed interacting with them as a kid.

She grew up with a very sweet black lab named Katie, which further inspired her to work with animals as a profession. In Jenna’s free time she enjoys going horseback riding and challenges herself to swim across Christina Lake every summer.

Emily graduated from NAIT in 2016 with honours. She has always had a great love of animals and enjoys every moment working with them. Emily loves to spend her free time outdoor; camping, riding horses, walking her dogs and spending time with her fiancé.

Hannah grew up all over Alberta, moving several times when she was young but finally settling in the Edmonton area. She always knew from a young age that she wanted to work in Veterinary medicine. She had many animals growing up from as small as a fish to two large horses, having all these animals further grew her passion for them. Hannah graduated from Olds college in 2019 and has been working in small animals medicine every since.
In her spare time she does agility with her dog, Hope. She also enjoys playing tennis and camping in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.
Hannah chose to work at the Beck Veterinary clinic because of the expertise of the senior staff and the family values they offered.

Jen first found the Beck Veterinary Clinic in 2016, when searching for high quality care for her senior pittie Mila. After Mila’s passing, Jen adopted two kittens, Ruby and Lulu, who have helped to heal her heart. Jen joined the Beck team as a Veterinary Technician Assistant, after being a stay at home mom for 14 years. Since Jen isn’t allowed to have all of the animals in the land, working at the clinic is the next best thing. Outside of work, Jen likes to bake, knit, tell terrible jokes and travel with her husband and kids.

meaghan-staffx282

Meaghan joined her spouse in Edmonton in December, 2020 and started working at Beck Veterinary Clinic in January, 2021. She is a second-generation vet tech after graduating from the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Veterinary Technology program in 2015. Prior to moving to Edmonton, she worked at a canine/feline practice in Saskatoon, in shelter medicine at the Saskatoon SPCA, and teaching in the vet tech program at Saskpolytech. From a horse racing family, she has always worked with animals including positions at veterinary practices in Stilwell, Kansas, Toronto, Ontario, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Most recently, Meaghan has started teaching again at NAIT in the Animal Health Technology program.

Meaghan enjoys competing in dog sports with her spaniel mix Beryllium (Rill) and Pomeranian Tusk Snowbeast (Tusk). Both have titles in Barn Hunt, Trailing & Locating (NASDA), and Urban Locating (NASDA). Of their two cats, Charlemagne (Bean) has previously competed in the household pet class in ACFA shows but is now retired. Gilgamesh (Gilly) is a Scottish Fold that decided to remain a house pet.

In her spare time, Meaghan enjoys cross country skiing, running, reading, and a variety of fiber-based crafts including knitting, sewing, and shuttle tatting.

Krystal-staffx282

Krystal has always had a passion for caring for animals since she was very little. She enjoyed many years of working as a kennel supervisor at a another great vet clinic. Dabbled in the travel and tourism industry, as well as enjoying years of being a cook at a fast paced pizza establishment. Being a Mom of two, landed her a fun gig running the school canteen for many years. And finally, drawn back to wanting to work with animals, was given the exciting opportunity, and has since been working with the best team ever at Beck. Any spare time is spent at the lake with her family and pets making memories.
